Without a doubt, there will always be that one negative comment, especially if you are a celebrity, influencer, etc. When navigating how to respond to unnecessary criticism, you must ask yourself what the overall goal is. It is okay to respond to a comment that is constructive but leaves negative emotions. Your response should highlight your ability to be transparent regarding the subject and accountability for any missteps. A great tip from an article by Whole Whale is acknowledging the issue at hand and understanding how you feel as a result of the negative comment. Another great tip would be to let the critic express their perspective to be heard and increase engagement. Although there is no guarantee of a positive outcome, one could successfully navigate through conflict via any social media platform.
Let’s review a scenario. Your favorite celebrity or influencer posts a silly 30-second video on TikTok. Their comment section may vary, ranging from funny, confused, to concerned, or even feeling upset. The influencer or celeb has various ways they could address this. They could either delete their post, leave a response in the comment section, create a follow-up video, etc. The answer here is: all options have pros and cons. There is no wrong answer. Their audience reactions will be based on interpretation and perception. The celebrity/influencer’s intent is what matters. A comment section does not define how talented they are or whether or not they are a good influence/person. However, their actions are the determinant for many.
