Parasocial Relationships through various social media platforms are affecting how we communicate in society. So many relationships are being built on TikTok, Instagram, X, and other platforms, creating a false fantasy or dream world for many, regardless of whether or not they have concluded this. These “one-sided” relationships typically give off a form of intimacy or closeness due to the amount of praise the person or idol is given. The more the person shares about their life (influencer or celebrity), the more the followers or audience members feel they “know” them.

Through research like the study in the International Journal of Adolescence and Youth (2025), one can gain an understanding of how parasocial relationships offer comfort and connection for adolescents. The study concludes that their emotions create dependency and blurred boundaries. This same approach can be seen on our favorite social media platforms, regardless of the age of the account user or follower. PR professionals are tasked with navigating such psychological complexities. They have to balance their clients' online relationships, such as brand management and crisis communication. Social media has so many benefits when used sparingly. It is a great way to network and build friendships; however, clearer boundaries should be established. Every artist, influencer, celebrity, content creator, and more is not obligated to share personal aspects of their life. We can all learn to effectively communicate with each other without involving obsessive behavior.
